Successor to the Ettore Bugatti designed Bebe the Peugeot Type 161 Quadrilette was introduced in December 1919. Intended to compete in the 'cyclecar' class, it was built around a punt type frame equipped with leaf sprung suspension (transverse front, quarter-elliptic rear). Powered by a 668cc L-head four-cylinder engine, its three-speed gearbox was mounted in unit with the differential-less worm-drive back axle. Metamorphosing into the Type 172 by the early 1920s, it was updated with a more conventional ladder frame chassis and optional four-wheel drum brakes from 1923.
Finished in yellow over black with black upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example has been entered from a deceased estate. Reportedly "acquired some years ago when a museum sold off some of its items because of escalating insurance costs", its current colour scheme is reputed to have originated from a role in the 1965 film 'Those magnificent men and their Flying Machines' for which the production team "had it sprayed yellow for a better effect on film". Thus, although not thought to have been factory fitted, its Wagonette body would appear to be at least forty years old. Apparently running within the last six months, it retains a host of period features including its brass radiator and lighting set. Full of character, this diminutive Vintage Peugeot comes with a dating letter from its manufacturer.
