By 1961 Standard-Triumph had decided that its TR range was looking dated and needed a revamp. To this end it enlisted the help of Italian stylist Michelotti who produced a notably sleek design. Entering production as the TR4, Triumph's newcomer had to battle with the Austin Healey 3000 and (later) MG B in the all important export markets but was thankfully well received by both the press and public alike. Initially powered by the familiar 1991cc four-cylinder engine (commonly found in the Standard Vanguard), the TR4 soon gained a more pokey twin Stromberg carburettor-fed 2138cc unit. Though, the 1991cc powerplant remained available to special order and was used by the `Works' four Powder Blue rally cars as well as the majority of cars exported to Japan. Updated in late 1964 as the TR4A, the two-seater gained a new grille, wooden dashboard, revised body-to-chassis mountings and independent rear suspension. However, some Americans showed a preference for the original model's `live' rear axle set-up and so to satisfy demand it became an optional feature on the TR4A.
Finished in Signal Red with black leather upholstery, this particular example was exported new to California. Said to have had "just two UK owners" since being repatriated in 2000, the first of whom commissioned its conversion to right-hand drive and sundry restoration work, `FJN 12C' reportedly benefits from "a black canvas hood, Mota-Lita wood-rim steering wheel, overdrive, stainless steel twin rear box sports exhaust system, updated black leather seats and 48-spoke painted wire wheels". Describing the car as "a very nice TR4A with `live' rear axle in well restored condition", the vendor adds that "the chassis and bodywork are very sound, the engine runs well with good oil pressure and the overdrive works". Apparently repainted earlier this year, the Triumph also boasts "excellent chromework". An appealing proposition, `FJN 12C' is offered for sale with "a small amount of history comprising: a few invoices, reprinted driver's handbook, BMIHT certificate and various old MOTs" (while, the current MOT certificate is valid until June 2009).
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
