After the Rolls-Royce bankruptcy of 1970, Rolls-Royce Motors, which had been newly floated away from the aero engine side of the business in 1971 to make cars, rather boldly launched the Camargue. At nearly £10,000 more costly than the Corniche, the really up-market model was double the price of a Shadow!
What was really behind the Pininfarina-designed 2-door coupe-like Camargue was most probably two factors - there was a long waiting list for the Corniche; and, in common with all manufacturers, R-R were prevented by Government regulations from increasing prices by more than 10 per cent - there were was no problem, however, in setting a really high/profitable price for a completely new model.
With only around one car completed a week, the Camargue was certainly exclusive. Maybe the £29,950 price tag had something to do with this rarity - even more so when the 1985 price of a Camargue had risen to £83,122! By the time the Italian-styled Roller was eventually discontinued in 1986, a total of just 531 had been made.
The entrant tells us that the 1975-built Camargue on offer had one former owner for twenty years. At some time, the car has been updated with chromed alloys as well as electric mirrors from a later model. The exhaust is in stainless steel and a Harvey Bailey suspension kit is fitted. Body and Crown Gold paintwork are said to be good and the interior in brown hide very good.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
