Lot details Registration No: KYN 607 Chassis No: B146FV Mot Expiry: Sept 2008
Almost as old as the model itself (which celebrates its sixty-first anniversary this year), the tradition of building Bentley MKVI-based Specials is a long and proud one. However, very few of the resultant cars can claim to match the rakish elegance of 'KYN 607'. Converted by acknowledged specialists Mallalieu in 1977, it is believed but not warranted to be one of just two cars reconfigured to their 'Mercia' design. Specially shortened, its box-section chassis plays host to independent coil-and-wishbone front suspension, a 'live' leaf-sprung rear axle and four-wheel drum brakes. While, other MKVI components include the 4257cc oise straight-six engine and four-speed manual gearbox. Riding on 'Derby' Bentley type 18-inch wire wheels (in place of the donor car's 16-inch steels) and employing a high back axle ratio, the Special is said to "cruise effortlessly at 70mph plus".
Fabricated from aluminium, the two-seater's sleek bodywork is punctuated by a wealth of fine detailing from the neatly sculpted front valance to the rear-mounted spare wheel via the imposing headlights and chrome-edged windscreen surround. Nicely appointed, the cockpit houses a wooden dashboard, sprung steering wheel, large diameter instruments and bucket seats all of which can be protected by a tonneau cover, sidescreens and recent hood if needs be. Finished in blue with beige leather upholstery, 'KYN 607' is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis) or "very good" (engine, gearbox, bodywork, paintwork, wheels / tyres) condition. Though, he goes on to comment that "not only does this Bentley look stunning, it drives superbly with eager performance, well spaced gears and excellent brakes". Featured - as one might expect - in the first edition of Ray Robert's tome 'Bentley Specials & Special Bentleys' on pages 275-6 and 306, this wonderful motorcar is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until September 2008 and historic class (free) road tax until August 2008.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
