The immediate post war years were marked by a surge in demand for transport in Europe that was met in part and at its most basic level by the cyclemotor. Typically small two stroke singles, they were designed to be attached to an existing bicycle frame, although in time complete machines built around heavier frames were introduced by some manufacturers. One of the most successful and prolific cyclemotors to be produced was the 38cc Mosquito manufactured by the Italian Garelli company. Displacing 38cc with a horizontal cylinder the little two stroke was claimed to produce 8bhp with a weight of about 4kg. Drive was transmitted to the host bicycles rear wheel by a friction roller. In total over two million units were produced and variants were built with three speeds and automatic clutches.
This example is fitted to a dedicated cycle motor frame featuring pressed steel blade girder forks and a fuel tank mounted on the top tube. Calliper brakes and a full lighting kit are fitted to the nicely restored machine.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
