Lot details Registration No: KPE644W Chassis No: 31179 Mot Expiry: June 2006
Debuting at the 1977 Earls Court Motor Fair, the 308 GTS (Gran Turismo Spider) was an immediate success. Ferrari's only open model at the time, its removable roof panel stowed neatly behind the seats. Utilising a subtly strengthened version of its 308 GTB (Gran Turismo Berlinetta) sibling's tubular spaceframe chassis, it employed the same all-round independent double-wishbone suspension, four-wheel disc brakes and rack and pinion steering. Powered by Maranello's magnificent 'quad-cam' 2926cc V8 engine mated to five-speed manual transmission, it was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 6.7 seconds and 150mph.
Finished in rosso red with nero black leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in either "as new" (engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, chassis) or "exceptional" (interior trim, paintwork, bodywork, wheels / tyres) condition. Reportedly a "genuine one owner car", its unusually low recorded mileage of 8,000 is said to be "confirmed by an excellent stamped official Ferrari service book". Awoken in June of this year to have its cambelts changed, this very special 308 GTS was apparently "returned to store immediately after". Dating from the last year of carburettor-fed 308 production, KPE 644W is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until June 5th 2006 and road tax until December 2005.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
