Palliser was a relatively short-lived South West London racing car manufacturer starting in 1968 and closing its doors four years later. The designer Len Wimhurst and patron Hugh Dibley (an airline pilot turned racer) built Formula Ford, F3 and Formula Atlantic cars and Vern Schuppan won the inaugural 1971 Formula Atlantic `Yellow Pages' Championship in a sister car to this one. The cars were re-badged as Winkelmann-Pallisers in the US as Bob Winkelmann was, and still is, quite a name out there and the brother of Roy who ran one of the last private F1 teams and `discovered' Jochen Rindt.
The vendor, Bob's nephew, has fitted a Lotus `Twin-Cam' engine as he was told by his uncle that Vern Schuppan preferred the proven Lotus unit to the more sophisticated yet fickle `FVA' engine. It is believed that only four examples of this type were ever produced, with this being the only example to sport integral bodywork.
The car had had little use when purchased by the vendor and the chassis (a genuine Arch Motors example, numbered AM7120) was in exceptional condition. It was delivered to Peter Denty for an extensive restoration. We understand that the unique original bodywork, now finished in black over silver, was re-used, except for the side pods which had to be reproduced, but as there was no engine or gearbox a full race `George Wadsworth' 1600cc Lotus `Twin-Cam' was sourced from John Moulds together with a Mark 8 Hewland (housing tough Mark 5 gears). Peter used the existing suspension as patterns and fabricated everything from scratch and Bob Winkelmann, who was closely involved in the restoration from day one, sourced the last original set of badges with the car riding on three piece split-rim `revolution' style wheels, all of which are held in place by sixteen specially machined studs.
The vendor has driven the car at both Donington and Brands Hatch, describing it as being not only "quick" but "responsive". He has, however, decided to concentrate on historic saloon car racing. Reportedly "on the button and ready to race" with FIA HTP papers, we are further informed that this rare Palliser single-seater has been invited to enter the new HSCC F5000 and Formula 2 Championship.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
