The XJ-S was Jaguar's replacement for the iconic E-Type, though totally different in character - while the E-Type was an uncompromising sports car of racing heritage, the XJ-S was more of a grand touring car. Based on the XJ saloon, the coupe version made its first appearance in September 1975. Initially it was powered by the company's 5.3-litre V12 engine mated to either a manual or automatic gearbox, but the manual option was soon withdrawn. In 1979, the Borg-Warner Model 12 automatic unit was replaced by GM's Turbo-Hydromatic 400 unit. A new High Efficiency engine with increased power was introduced in 1981, along with five-spoke alloy wheels, revised bumpers and updates to the interior trim. The following year, the model somewhat unexpectedly took to the race tracks, taking first and second place in the TT at Silverstone. A cabriolet version of the XJ-S, the XJ-SC, made its debut in 1983, equipped with the new 3.6-litre AJ6 engine. This two- / 2+2-seater model was not a full convertible, having a non-removable centre section and fixed cant rails above the doors. The option of Jaguar's established 5.3-litre V12 engine came in 1985 and in 1988 the targa-type body was replaced with a fully convertible one. Some 12,372 convertible XJ-Ss and 5,013 cabriolet XJ-SCs were made before the model range was replaced by the XK8 in 1990.
The car offered is one of the full convertible models. Built in 1989 it is finished in black with magnolia/red leather upholstery and sports the 5.3-litre V12 engine option. It has remained in the same ownership for the last 10 years as part of a 14-car collection. The mileage is reported to be under 64,000 from new and the owner claims the car to be "very good" with regard to its engine, automatic transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork - the only slight blemish being a very small repair to the hood. MOT'd and taxed until the end of October this year, the Jaguar comes complete with waterproof cover. At launch, the XJ-S's `flying buttress' styling somewhat divided opinion, but time has proved the car to be an especially competent high-speed tourer of enduring character and good ones are now highly prized.
