Launched in 1971, the R107-series SL was beautifully engineered. Notably rigid for a convertible, its two-door monocoque was equipped with all round independent suspension, power assisted steering and four-wheel disc brakes. Lauded by the contemporary motoring press for its performance and refinement, the 500SL, flagship of the UK range, was unveiled in May 1980. Powered by a 4973cc (240bhp, 299lbft of torque) V8 engine mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox, it was reputedly capable of 140mph and 0-60mph in 7.8 seconds. In production for nine years, the model's fearsome price tag (it cost some £41,700 by 1989) ensured that only 11,817 were dispatched worldwide.
Finished in thistle metallic green with cream cloth upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in good overall condition with regard to its engine, transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork and wheels / tyres. Benefiting from a recent respray, its mileage of 103,102 is apparently supported by "service history and twelve previous MOT certificates". Used for various rallies over the last three years including the Welsh Classic, this smart 500SL is offered for sale with hardtop roof, MOT certificate valid until July 2006 and road tax until 31st December 2005.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
