'At last - a comfortable Mini' was Motor magazine's take on the Mini Clubman at its introduction in 1969. The Saloon version of the newcomer had been penned by ex-Ford stylist Roy Haynes as a replacement for the Riley Elf and Wolseley Hornet, while the related Estate car was intended to succeed the established Countryman and Traveller. However, a change of plan saw both round and square nosed Minis produced concurrently, until the Clubman range gave way to the Metro in 1980. There were pros and cons to the Clubman - its longer nose offered far better crash protection and infinitely superior under-bonnet access. It was also an altogether better equipped car, but was inevitably more expensive and also aerodynamically inferior to the classic 1959 design. The Motor magazine test confirmed a 0-60mph time of 14.2 seconds and a mean top speed of 87.5mph. A total of 275,583 Clubman Saloons were produced all told.
The right-hand drive example on offer was produced in 1971 and features Aqua-coloured bodywork teamed with a Blue/Black interior. The vendor considers 'JUL 728K' to be in "excellent" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork. The odometer reads an unwarranted 44,133 miles and this smart Clubman is offered for sale with a fresh MOT and photographic proof of its restoration and engine overhaul.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
