Germans Siegfried Beltman and Maurice Schultze founded Triumph in Coventry, where they produced their first motorcycle, a Belgian Minerva-engined bicycle, in 1902. Later, Triumph made their own motors.
When Jack Sangster acquired the bike part of Triumph in 1936, the owner of Ariel put Edward Turner in charge of Triumph bike production in Coventry. It was Turner who designed the overhead valve, parallel twin of 498cc capacity, which powered the 1937 Twin, which really formed the basis of so many Triumph milestone machines well into the 1980s. Post-WW2 production resumed at Meriden, just outside the bombed-out motor city, where a long list of classic twins - like the Tiger, Thunderbird, Daytona and Bonneville - were produced, all directly related to Triumph's first Triumph Speed Twin.
Being auctioned here is a 1969-manufactured Bonneville, a 650cc twin, which was restored in 1988 during previous ownership of David Whitfield, Secretary of the TR30C. According to the vendor, the condition of paint and brightwork are still good, and the engine and cycle parts also in very good order.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
