Replacement for the much loved and still competitive MGA, the 1962 launched MGB took the concept a stage further by adding a degree of comfort and refinement to the good performance and handling characteristics which had made the MGA so popular. Of unitary construction unlike its predecessor, the MGB was powered by the 1798cc B-Series unit producing 95 bhp giving very sprightly performance of 0-60 in around 11.5 seconds and a top speed of over 100mph. Also featuring front disc brakes and luxuries such as wind-up windows (although a heater was still listed as an optional extra at £6), the MGB now came close to matching the comfort offered by its major market competitor the Sunbeam Alpine, whilst offering much stronger performance and better handling characteristics. Early development saw the introduction of a more robust 5-bearing engine in September 1964, larger 12-gallon fuel tank in March 1965 and standard front anti-roll bar in 1966. Entering a nominal 'Mark 2' form in October 1967 the revised model featured an all-synchromesh gearbox (with automatic option now available), standard alternator and reversing lights.
The British Racing Green UK market example offered here was first registered in 1968 and the mileage shown on the odometer of 5,782 is said to be the mileage covered since an engine overhaul. Bought by the current owner six years ago we are told that since then the engine has been refurbished together with "new petrol tank, fuel pump, rear springs, shockers, front suspension, radiator, new hood, road wheels and tyres, steering wheel, respray, new discs, 6v battery, 2 new headlights, propshaft". Said to have been "converted to alternator" the car requires "door panels to be fitted" and attention to the "driver's side window mechanism". A large number of invoices and photographs of the work will be available for inspection. Described by the vendor as having "very good" engine, "good" electrics, paintwork, bodywork, transmission, chassis & wheels / tyres and "fair" interior the car will be sold with tax until the end of July 2007 and we are told that it will be presented to the sale with a fresh MOT.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
