Lot details Registration No: FRR222D Chassis No: GC62598 Mot Expiry: May 2006
Launched in 1961, the Michelotti styled TR4 was the first TR-series sports car to incorporate wind-up windows and through-flow ventilation. With independent coil sprung front suspension, a 'live' rear axle and disc/drum brakes; its chassis layout was similar to that of its TR3A predecessor. However, the adoption of rack and pinion steering and a four-inch wider track gave the later model notably better handling. Powered by a 2138cc, four-cylinder, ohv engine developing some 104bhp and 128lbft of torque, the TR4 was reputedly capable of 110mph and 0-60mph in 10.5 seconds. Such performance was easily accessed thanks to the presence of synchromesh on each of the four speeds in its manual gearbox (another TR first). Updated in late 1964 as the TR4A, it gained a new grille, revised body-to-chassis mountings and most importantly of all independent rear suspension.
Finished in red with black upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in very good (paintwork, bodywork) to excellent (engine, gearbox, chassis, interior trim, electrical equipment) overall condition. In the current ownership since June 2002, the last three years have reportedly seen it "refurbished and improved to the value of £9,000" and treated to "summer use only". Benefiting from overdrive, wire wheels, more luxurious seats and a 'Surrey top', this cherished Triumph is offered for sale with history file, MOT certificate current until 29th May 2006 and historic class (free) road tax until May 2006. Though, we are informed that the original seats and tonneau cover are "available if required".
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
