Based in Kings Road, Tyseley, Birmingham - once but sadly no longer the most important motor manufacturing centre in Europe - Excelsior was one of the second city's many bike makers who employed Villiers 2-stroke engines to power their lightweights, which were so often bought by commuters for affordable, albeit rather basic transport.
In addition, Excelsior, which had won much motor sporting heritage in road racing as well competing in off-road events, also built their own 250cc and 328cc 2-stroke twins that performed well for sports bike buying customers. Perhaps the most memorable Excelsior motor was the 492cc triple, based on the 328 twin though with an extra cylinder added, which powered the diminutive Berkeley-Excelsior sportscar.
Offered here is a 1959-built, Villiers-engined 150cc bike in red, which, claims the vendor, is running, and is both taxed and MOT tested, and needs only the tank transfers to complete its restoration. If you are in the market for a Villiers lightweight, then this Excelsior could be just the lot to add to your collection.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
