Lot details Registration No: GSJ 473 Chassis No: H-BT7-L/1966 Mot Expiry: April 2008
A significant step in terms of 'Big Healey' evolution and foundation block for one of the 1960s' most charismatic rally cars, the 3000 MKI was introduced in March 1959. Capable of nearly 120mph, it was powered by an enlarged 2912cc version of the BMC C-Series straight six engine that developed some 124bhp and 167lbft of torque. Although, equipped with a similar chassis design to its 100/6 forebear, the new model enjoyed notably better braking thanks to the adoption of Girling front discs. Fitted with wire wheels and adjustable front seats as standard, it was available in two-seater (BN7) or 2+2 (BT7) guises.
Finished in metallic blue with black upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "mint" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. According to an accompanying British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, chassis 'HBT7L/1966' was despatched new to the Caribbean island of St Lucia. Repatriated during the early 1990s before being treated to a very extensive restoration by its previous owner, the Big Healey boasts a number of desirable modifications including: an oil cooler, triple Weber carburettors, rear disc brakes and 72-spoke wire wheels. Further benefiting from a 'Works' hardtop, tonneau cover and full weather gear, 'GSJ 473' is said to have been "only dry driven for the last six years". Kept in an air chamber, this pampered 3000 MKI is offered for sale with aforementioned BMIHT certificate, sundry restoration invoices and MOT certificate valid until April 2008.
