The postwar Midgets from the MG works at Abingdon were a great success at home and overseas. The first was the TC with its lengthy narrow bonnet, tall and narrow tyres and beam axles, and then came the more hunky TD replacement.
Although powered with the same 4-cylinders in-line motor with pushrod-operated valves of 1250cc capacity producing 55bhp at 5200rpm as the TC, the TD was endowed with an excellent independent front suspension set-up, which dictated a more substantial chassis and wider section tyres on smaller diameter wheels, as well as having more internally spacious bodywork.
The 4-on-the-floor manual gearbox had synchromesh engagement for the top three ratios, whilst the suspension was independent at the front by wishbones and coil springs and, at the back, a live axle was sprung with semi-elliptic leaf springs. Braking was achieved by hydraulically-operated drum brakes all round.
Offered here is a 1952-built TD, a righthand drive sports, which has returned to the UK from the dry and rust-free climate of Southern Australia. The open 2-seater has been in receipt of a full restoration and there are photos in the documents file recording work carried out. The chassis is said to be in good condition as are both the black painted bodywork and the brown interior and tonneau cover. The motor and all the electrical equipment are reportedly in very good order, too, and the 4-speed manual gearbox is claimed to be good.
