Lot details Registration No: VSK 908 Chassis No: TC8389 Mot Expiry: None
Introduced in late 1945, the MG TC struck a chord with the buying public despite being almost wilfully old-fashioned. Boasting a wider cockpit than its TB predecessor, the new model was similarly based around a ladder-frame chassis equipped with all-round semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension and nine-inch hydraulic drum brakes. With its dual-cowl dashboard, fold-flat windscreen, cutaway-doors, swept front / rear wings and rear-mounted spare wheel, the TC looked every inch the traditional sports car. Powered by the Abingdon marque's renowned XPAG 1250cc OHV four-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed synchromesh manual gearbox, it was reputedly capable of 78mph. The last MG product to ride on nineteen-inch wire wheels, the TC attracted a strong following in the USA (especially among demobbed servicemen).
According to the T-Register's (www.tregister.org) production record search facility, chassis number 'TC8389' was built on 6th April 1949. Supplied new to America, it was to right-hand drive specification (as were all MG TCs). Only repatriated during the early 1990s, 'VSK 908' has been entered on behalf of a deceased estate. Stated to have covered less than 5,000 miles in the last twelve years, it is described by one of the executors as a "healthy car" that "runs smoothly and with good oil pressure". While, he further notes that the MG possesses a "good clutch", "very good chassis" and "excellent wheels / tyres". Though, he feels that the steering wheel would benefit from some attention. Finished in red with tan leather upholstery, this archetypal 1940s sportscar is offered for sale with an engineer's report (which confirms the mileage covered since the mid 1990s), parts catalogue, MOT records and other literature".
