Reviving memories of the incomparable 250 GTO (Gran Turismo Omologato) of the '60s, the Ferrari 288 GTO of the '80s was a homolgation version of the 308 GTB, a minimum of 200 of which had to be built to allow Ferrari entry into the new Group B racing series of the time. As things transpired, the series was soon abandoned due to a lack of entries and none of the 272 GTOs made were ever campaigned in it. They were therefore sold purely as road cars and are, not surprisingly, becoming increasingly sought after. The model's 2855cc V8 produced a cool 400bhp with the aid of a pair of IHI turbochargers; sufficient power to sprint the Ferrari to 60mph in under five seconds and on to a top speed of around 190mph. Unlike the standard 308, whose engine is mounted transversely, the GTO's unit was aligned longitudinally and occupied not only the engine bay, but also what served as boot space on the normal 308.
The model's rarity and value have inevitably encouraged a number of would-be owners to create their own versions from other vehicles - in this case a 1976 Lancia Coupe. The Evocation apparently contains a number of genuine Ferrari parts, including the Speedline three-piece split rim wheels. The 2.0-litre Lancia twin-cam engine is allied to a five-speed manual gearbox and sports fuel injection as well as a four-into-one exhaust manifold. The interior is said to have been completely retrimmed and the new tyres will have travelled no further than from Huddersfield to the sale, so should still have the pimples to prove it. The vendor describes the re-clothed Lancia as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim and bodywork. As you might expect, the look-a-like features red paintwork, while the interior is a mix of red and black imitation leather. The cherished number 'RUT 994' is included in the sale along with a tailored Ferrari dust cover and Ferrari warning triangle. If you dream of owning a genuine 288 GTO but lack the wherewithal to buy one, this could just be the car for you. It appears to look the part and, though arguably short of a few hundred horsepower, presumably still goes pretty well. It should certainly impress the neighbours!
