OFFERED FOR SALE WITHOUT RESERVE
Code named 'Zest', the TR4 was introduced in 1961 as a replacement for the TR3A. Though it was based on the chassis and drivetrain of its much-loved predecessor it cut a far more modern dash, thanks to an all new Michelotti-styled body. Power was provided by Triumph's proven OHV four-cylinder engine. The capacity was, however, increased to 2138cc. Other mechanical updates included a wider track front and rear, rack and pinion steering and an all-synchromesh gearbox. The optional overdrive was now made to operate on second and third gears as well as top - the result was effectively a close-ratio box with seven speeds.
The 1964 example offered was repatriated from California before being professionally restored, converted to right-hand drive and race prepared at a cost of more than £30,000. The comprehensive specification includes: lightened body with fibreglass wings, bonnet and boot; Perspex windows; detachable fiberglass hardtop; full rollcage; bucket seats; full harnesses; fire extinguisher; electrical cut-off switches and small-rimmed Mountney steering wheel. The 2289cc engine was overhauled by TR Enterprises of Mansfield in 2007 and has: a racing camshaft; uprated followers; twin Webers; Facet fuel pump; in-line fuel regulator; lightened flywheel and upgraded valve springs. Also: uprated cooling system, oil cooler; Kenlowe fan; lightweight alternator and starter; electronic rev-counter and large bore exhaust. The engine is mated to a race-spec gearbox. The brakes use magnesium drums at the rear, and the TR4 rides on Minilite-style wheels shod with Yokohama tyres (a spare set, is available separately). This attractive Triumph has been garaged in the winter and, though not raced in the five-and-a-half years of present ownership, has completed three track days and the occasional road rally. Said to be perfectly road-usable, it comes complete with extensive pictorial history file detailing the restoration and race preparation.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
