With its slinky Pininfarina-styled coachwork, the Testarossa caused a sensation in the motoring press when it was unveiled on the Ferrari stand at the 1984 Paris Salon; the name coming from the earlier Testa Rossa roadsters - Testa Rossa referring to the red-topped cylinder heads.
From the 250 Testa Rossa, the 3-litre V12 was developed and this engine went on to dominate the World Championship of Makes for three seasons. The 250 GTO then took the chequered flag, its engine also derived from the Testa Rossa racer power unit.
This new Testa Rossa coupe replaced the BB Series, the Berlinetta Boxer having enjoyed a twelve year run. Totally redesigned, the 12-cylinder Boxer engine only retained the capacity of its predecessor, having a 4-valve head design and being 20kg lighter than the 512BB power unit. The new 390bhp motor with Bosch fuel injection produced 50bhp more power with increased torque and reduced fuel consumption - in 1984, state of the art.
The Scottish vendor of the 1986-manufactured Ferrari Testa Rossa offered here, a righthand drive coupe with believed genuine 28,494 mileage, describes the overall condition of fixed head bodywork, traditional racey red paintwork, tan interior, 5-litre 12-cylinder motor and 5-speed manual transmission as being A1. The wheels and tyres are new and the carpets have been renewed. This sensational good looker drives superbly, says the vendor, and has the benefit of having the fullest history on file.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
