Lot details Registration No: RAX 50F Chassis No: 1946785412674 Mot Expiry: June 2007
Introduced three years after Chevrolet's wonderfully dramatic 1965 Mako Shark II show car, the so-called 'C3' Corvette borrowed heavily from its design exercise sibling's 'coke bottle' silhouette. Underpinned by a perimeter frame chassis featuring all-round independent suspension, recirculating ball steering and four-wheel disc brakes, the newcomer's beautifully moulded fibreglass skin wore slimline chrome bumpers. With even the mildest of its 'small block' V8 engines being rated at 300bhp and 360lbft of torque, the C3 was a predictably strong performer. Tested by Road & Track magazine against a Porsche 911, Jaguar E-type and Mercedes-Benz 280SL just such a 'baby' Vette acquitted itself with honours. Demolishing the opposition in a straight line, it split the Europeans on the slalom and other handling tests.
Finished in red with black leather upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example is described by the vendor as being in "lovely" overall condition. Imported to the UK during 1989, 'RAX 50F' is said to be "a very rare spec car with the desirable options of power steering, leather seats and four-speed manual transmission". Reputedly one of "only 2,429 '68 Corvettes to be factory-fitted with leather seats (probably fewer still in Convertible form)", it sports a white soft-top roof. Riding on alloy wheels, this iconic American sportscar is offered for sale with "original 1968 handbook, lots of USA bills / history", MOT certificate valid until June 8th 2007 and historic class (free) road tax.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
