Lot details Registration No: 313 KAB Chassis No: BN2-L/229055 Mot Expiry: Aug 2008
Arguably the purest incarnation of the 'Big Healey', the 100/4 entered production in 1953. Based around a box-section chassis equipped with independent front suspension, an underslung 'live' rear axle and all-round Girling hydraulic drum brakes, the pared-back two-seater was powered by a wonderfully torquey 2660cc four-cylinder engine mated to three-speed manual plus overdrive transmission. Justifiably praised by the contemporary press for its poise and handling, the Gerry Coker styled 100/4 remains one of the all time great British sportscars. Only made for a year or so (1955-1956), the desirable BN2 variant boasted a stronger four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox and improved brakes.
Finished in blue over ivory with black upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good overall" condition. Following its importation from America, Chas Matthews had '313 KAB' restored and converted to right-hand drive by renowned marque specialist John Chatham. Passing through the hands of Philip Edwards thereafter, it has been in the current ownership since June 1991. According to an accompanying typed specification sheet, the Big Healey benefits from a tuned engine (competition Carillo steel crankshaft / rods, polished / ported cylinder head, big bore exhaust, oil cooler), gearlever mounted overdrive switch (operating on 2nd, 3rd and 4th), front disc brake conversion, heavy-duty 72-spoke wire wheels and an anti-tramp bar. Sporting a louvered bonnet, FIA rollcage, competition seats, GRP undershields and Le Mans-style fuel / oil fillers, it nevertheless retains a functional hood. Treated to new oil / water pumps and fresh camshaft / big end / main bearings over the years, this well prepared BN2 is offered for sale with FIA HVIF papers and MOT certificate valid until August 2008.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
