The need to comply with forthcoming US safety legislation saw MG revise the design of its Midget sportscar for the final time in 1974. Entering showrooms that October, the resultant MKIV version (as it was unofficially known) was immediately recognisable courtesy of its impact absorbing 'rubber bumpers'. Far better integrated than the similar contrivances found on other American market cars (think Mercedes-Benz W107 SL), the weight penalty they incurred was more than offset by the adoption of a new 1500cc engine. Sourced from the Triumph Spitfire together with an all-synchromesh gearbox, it gave the Midget a notable boost in performance. Capable of over 100mph and known for its tidy handling, the MKIV was well received by the press and public alike.
Finished in Russet Brown with fawn vinyl upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "all good" (electrical equipment), "very good" (1491cc engine, four-speed manual gearbox, interior trim, chassis), "A1" (bodywork), "immaculate" (paintwork) or "new" (wheels / tyres) condition. Stated to have covered just 34,400 miles from new, the past six months have apparently seen 'TMU 654S' benefit from "a new hood, hood cover and tonneau" as well as "new minilite wheels and tyres". While at 33,000 miles, the engine was reportedly removed and the car treated to the following: "balanced crankshaft / flywheel, new clutch, unleaded conversion, new oil cooler, clutch / brake master cylinders, branch manifold, free flow exhaust and new springs / dampers". Reputedly featured in the "Great Marques MG" book (published in 1988), the roadster is said to "just need driving". An enticing prospect, this "mint" Midget is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until March 24th 2007 and road tax until March 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
