Introduced in 1959 as the entry level Ford, the Popular 100E (or 'New Popular' as it was sometimes known) was a curious mix of old and new technologies. Thus, on the one hand it utilised a monocoque bodyshell equipped with Macpherson strut independent front suspension and on the other it was powered by an 1172cc sidevalve engine mated to a three-speed manual gearbox. Nigh on indistinguishable from its Anglia 100E predecessor (with whom it shared its bodyshell), the 'New Popular' boasted separate Lucas rear light units. As reliable as it was frugal, it proved a strong seller during its three years of production. Today, 'New Populars' exert a certain nostalgic appeal and are well catered for by the Ford Sidevalve Owners Club.
Reportedly barn stored for the last five years, this particular example is presented for sale as a restoration project. Thought to have been repainted at some stage, the saloon is accompanied by a quantity of spares.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
