The increasing importance of the 600cc Supersport class was acknowledged by the organisers of the TT when they introduced the Supersport 600 TT in 1989 as a replacement for the Production C race. In the FZR600 Yamaha finally had a competitive machine, although it was not until 1994 that they achieved a win.
The new model followed the design practices established with the introduction of the larger FZR models but relied on 4 valves per head rather than the 5 of the larger models. The power unit featured forward inclined cylinders helping to keep the centre of gravity low and transmitted a claimed 90bhp to the rear wheel via a six speed gearbox. The unit was mounted in an alloy "Deltabox" frame. When tested by MCN they described the 1994 Yamaha FZR600R as "The new boss" of the middleweight class following their first road test, a conclusion that was supported when the machine offered won the 1994 Supersport 600 TT at a speed of 115.31 mph in Iain Duffus hands. The motorcycle, that was purchased by the vendor directly from Iain Duffus also secured 3rd overall in the 1994 British Supercup Championship having been ridden by Duffus to third places at the two Donnington rounds, Mallory Park, Pembray, Cadwell Park and Oulton Park together with a fourth place finish at Snetterton and finished in Second place in the 1994 Ulster Grand Prix.
The machine has been housed in a private collection and is presented in very good condition in the livery that it competed and won the 1994 TT in.
