The 450SEL was standard issue to all F1 GP drivers during the 1970s and 1980s when they were supplied with these Autobahn stormers by the Mercedes-Benz factory (famously, former World Champ James Hunt was forced to store his on bricks outside his South London home as he could only afford to fuel his A35 van!).
This righthand drive 450SEL with 6.9-litre eight underbonnet first left the Stuttgart works in 1979, since when the high powered luxury-spec express has had five former keepers, the last for eleven satisfying years. Fully loaded when new, the saloon has the benefit of air-conditioning and electric sunroof, rear headrests and alloys shod with whitewalls.
The 92,000 miles displayed when entered is believed by the vendor to be the genuine total mileage. The current condition of the bodyshell and paintwork in anthractite grey as well as charcoal velour trimmed interior are rated as good. Both 6834cc V8 and automatic transmission are reportedly in good order, all electrical equipment is said to be working well and the tyres have been renewed.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
