Self-evidently the subject of much past restoration work, ‘CYC 531C’ is in better cosmetic and structural condition than many remaining Zodiac MKIIIs we have encountered. Although, there is little accompanying paperwork, the present odometer reading of 80,600 miles is given credence by the condition of the interior which appears to be highly original (or at least an older retrim). The engine bay has been detailed and a look underneath reveals a fresh exhaust. In many ways as evocative of the 1960s as a Jaguar E-Type or Mini, this appealing Ford is offered for sale with V5C Registration Document, Owner’s Handbook, fresh MOT and sundry club magazines.
Model Background:
Introduced in 1962, the MKIII version of deservedly popular Ford Zephyr / Zodiac pairing boasted bold new transatlantic-inspired styling courtesy of Canadian Roy Brown. Sharing the same basic monocoque bodyshell design complete with McPherson strut independent front suspension, disc / drum brakes and live rear axle, the Zodiac was differentiated from its humbler Zephyr 6 sibling by longer rear doors, narrower C-pillars (giving a sharper roofline) and a bespoke grille sporting four headlamps (rather than two) and more luxurious interior fittings. Powered by a 2553cc straight-six OHV engine developing 109bhp and 140lbft of torque, the five / six-seater’s 100mph top speed was accessed via an improved four-speed all synchromesh gearbox complete with column change. Priced at £1,070, the Zodiac was a strong seller. However, surviving examples are now a rare sight on today’s roads.
