The Ford Motor Company was quick to restore postwar production in the UK, with the first 4-cylinder Anglias and Prefects coming off the Dagenham production lines in 1945. Initially, identical to the prewar models, they were mildly restyled in 1949 and gained Consul-like, full-width bodies and McPherson suspension in 1954, although 1172cc sidevalve engines were employed for a further five years. Meanwhile, the old Anglia with prewar styling was continued, though under the name Popular.
On offer here is one such Ford Popular saloon, which was manufactured in Essex in 1959, and which has been the subject of an extensive restoration at a cost of £6,500, including refurbishment of the chassis and a full body strip-down with floor replaced, headlining renewed and repaint. With the work completed, the car, which was one of the last Pops to have been produced and had a believed to be genuine 47,156 total mileage displayed on the odometer when last MOT tested in July, is claimed to be very good. For the condition of saloon body and green paintwork is described as exceptional and the tan interior good. The 4-cylinder motor and 3-speed gearbox as well as the electrical equipment are all said to be in good order. Because of its age, this historic Ford qualifies for a Road Fund tax exempt disc and, as already mentioned, the MOT test pass certificate will be current until next July.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
