1983 BMW Alpina B2.8
Stunning example

Estimated at £39,000 - £45,000

Lot details

Registration No: A818 VNY
Chassis No: WBADA7204D7591593
MOT: April 2023

  • A very rare UK, right-hand drive E28 Alpina B2.8i, fitted with the desirable five-speed manual gearbox
  • Only 54,460 miles from new (atoc) and just four former keepers
  • Previous long-term ownership (1988 - 2021) with much of that period spent in dry storage
  • Recently subject to full mechanical recommissioning
  • Excellent body and paint restoration just completed
  • Highly original example and offered with the bookpack

Built between 1981 and 1985, this is one of less than ten cars that are thought to have survived. Supplied with either a ZF automatic transmission or the more desirable Getrag 265 5-speed manual gearbox, the standard M30 528i straight six-cylinder engine was upgraded as part of the conversion with the Alpina B9 type exhaust system, and the power output measured an impressive 192bhp at 5800rpm. Alpina springs and Bilstein gas dampers were further advancements from the standard 528i specification. They cost a considerable premium over the BMW 528i SE (E28) on which it was based.

Manufactured in 1983, this B2.8 is a rare UK-supplied, right-hand drive example, being supplied new via Western Counties BMW of Bristol on the 25th of November. Fitted with the 2788cc straight-six engine with the desirable five-speed manual transmission, the Alpina is finished in stunning Henna Red with Grey Velour interior, looking every bit the 80s super saloon that it was. In previous long-term ownership, from 1988 until 2021, and remaining in storage from 2006 until the end of that period, ‘A818 VNY’ has covered just 54,460 miles from new, at the time of consignment, and has had only four former keepers.

The Alpina specification comprises; an Alpina B9 Type exhaust system, Getrag 260 Overdrive gearbox, 3.45 ratio limited-slip differential, Alpina springs with Bilstein gas dampers, Alpina 16in wheel rims, dealer stripe kit, Alpina front spoiler, rear spoiler, Alpina badges and dashboard plaque, and steering wheel. It has benefited from recommissioning in 2022, which includes full brake overhaul with new discs, pads, and hoses; full service; new fuel tank and fuel lines; valve clearances adjustment and general thorough check through.

In the last six months thousands of pounds have been spent and a massive amount of man hours improving and transforming this example to the car presented today. The exterior has been repainted in factory correct Hennarot (Henna Red) paint, the engine bay has been refreshed, being cleaned, repainted and detailed and ancillaries have been replaced/refurbished where required. The original wheels have been fully refurbished. Original Alpina & BMW parts have been sourced from Germany at great cost to complete this car as accurately as possible including a correct Gold stripe kit, original Alpina rear spoiler, all badges, Alpina wheel centres, fog lamps, grille and many other parts.

The result is a beautiful example of the rare Alpina B2.8i which are becoming very hard to find especially in right-hand drive. This car would make a perfect addition to any car collection or as a first entry into classic car ownership.

‘A818 VNY’ is offered with the original book pack, including the original stamped handbook, a current V5C, and is MOT'd until April 2023. A highly original example of a modern classic that stands out from the crowd and should rightfully be preserved for future generations to see and admire. Performance BMWs continue to have a strong following and this Alpina is sure to be the talking point of any classic car show you choose to attend.
