Taking its name from a previous Maserati great, the new Ghibli was launched in 1992. Last of the Biturbo line, its muscular styling clothed an impressively rigid two-door monocoque bodyshell. Tempered by Koni's freshly developed electronically adjustable hydraulic damping system, its fully independent suspension was allied to four-wheel ventilated disc brakes and power assisted rack and pinion steering. Boasting twin water-cooled IHI turbochargers and dual air-to-air intercoolers, its 'quad-cam' 24-valve V6 engine - available in 2.0 litre or 2.8 litre capacities - was prodigiously powerful (the larger 2790cc version producing some 284bhp and 305lbft of torque). Sumptuously appointed, the Ghibli's cabin came with air-conditioning and electric windows / mirrors / seat recliners as standard. Supercar quick regardless of transmission choice (contemporary road tests mention figures of up to 160mph), it proved highly exclusive. Indeed, according to Maserati archivist Signor Ermanno Cozza, total right-hand drive Ghibli 2.8 litre production amounted to just 133 cars (shared between the UK, Hong Kong, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand).
Finished in metallic Verdi Brooklyn with cream leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed ZF automatic transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork and paintwork (while, he rates the wheels / tyres as "very good"). Said to have been previously owned by the Classic & Sports Car Club of Birmingham amongst others, it is reputed to have had an extensive service in May 2004 followed by a cambelt and head gasket replacement some four months later. Showing an unwarranted 76,000 miles on its odometer, this wonderfully understated Maserati is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until January 31st 2008.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
