The postwar Citroen DS19 streamliner with its unique air/oil suspension was way ahead of its time when unveiled at the 1955 Paris Salon. By the end of the first day of the exhibition, an amazing 12,000 orders for the Andre Lefebre and Flaminio Bertoni penned design had been received.
The DS20 replacement with 1985cc engine arrived in 1968. The 1970 DS21 had a 5-speed gearbox. Whilst the 1972 DS23 was offered with engine capacity increased to 2347cc and with the fuel-injected version producing 130bhp. Such non-stop innovation was costly, however, and the loss-making marque was happily rescued by Peugeot's 1975 takeover-merger. The rare estate is reckoned to be the most desirable version of the classic DS.
This 1973 righthand drive D23 Safari has been in current ownership since 1995. In 1996, estate bodywork was stripped and repainted, seats were reupholstered with grey leather, and engine, hydraulics and electrics were overhauled. The current cosmetic and mechanical condition is described as good and the 108,260 mileage when entered is believed to be genuine.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
