Introduced in August 1991, the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class (codenamed W140) was a technological tour de force. Renowned for its wonderful build quality and refinement, it boasted such niceties as double pane window glazing and self-closing doors / boot. Based upon a rigid monocoque bodyshell equipped with all round independent suspension (double-wishbone front / multi-link rear), four-wheel disc brakes and power assisted steering, its imposing 'footprint' was belied by excellent road manners. A challenger for the title of 'best car in the world', the Stuttgart manufacturer's flagship could be had in standard saloon, long wheelbase or fixed head coupe guises. Though, many felt that the latter variant was by far the best looking. Electronically limited to 155mph, the CL 500 coupe was powered by a 4973cc DOHC 32-valve V8 engine. Known internally as the M119, this imposing unit was credited with 322bhp and 354lbft of torque. Mated to standard fit automatic transmission, it reputedly enabled the sleek two-door to sprint from 0-100km/h in 6.7 seconds. Facelfted in 1997 with a new grille design and clear indicators etc, the CL coupe range was phased out for the 2000 model year.
Finished in silver with blue leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, automatic transmission, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Although, the accompanying registration document apparently shows three former keepers, we are informed that "one of these was Mercedes-Benz", while another was the seller "recently added in my business's name". Stated to have covered 101,000 miles from new, 'R417 HFR' has reportedly been "serviced by Mercedes" with "eight stamps in the book". Riding on alloy wheels and sporting "professionally tinted windows", this sleek Mercedes coupe is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until July 2009.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
