The XJ6 saloon was first announced by Jaguar in 1968, initially powered by either the familiar 4235cc XK six-cylinder engine or a new 2.8-litre economy six, the latter proving unreliable in service and therefore discontinued in 1973. An XJ12 with far more complex 5.3-litre V12 engine soon topped the range and a Daimler-badged and grilled version increased choice for Chairmen clients. Meanwhile, a two-door XJC coupe with choice of 4.2 or V12 engine joined the four-door saloons in Jaguar showrooms. It was the XJ6, however, which was to prove the mainstay of Jaguar production.
This XJ6 Series 2, a right-hand drive four-door, first left Jaguar’s Coventry factory in 1974. Since then, it is claimed that £18,000 has been spent on bodywork, interior, engine and transmission for the car to be a show-piece for Gatwick Jaguar.
Rebuilt 4.2-litre six-cylinder engine and automatic transmission are reportedly in excellent order. Indeed, apart from the chrome bumpers, which need new over-riders, and the beige leather interior, which could benefit from some minor finishing, the car still looks brand new, says the vendor. With the car are all bills and original brochures.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
