Unveiled in May 1962, the strikingly modern, monocoque-construction MGB was initially only available in Roadster form - the Pininfarina-penned hatchback GT derivative with 2+2 seating not being offered until October 1965. Both variants featured suspension by wishbones and coil springs at the front and a live axle mounted on leaf springs at the rear. Damping was by lever arm units all round and braking by discs at the front and drums at the rear. At launch, the model was powered by a three-bearing version of BMC's 1798cc B-Series engine that produced 95bhp at 5,400rpm. However, with an eye on superior reliability, this unit was replaced by a five-bearing one two years later. By the time GT production ceased in 1980, a total of 125,282 are said to have been manufactured, a large proportion of which are still in active service.
This MGB actually started life as a 1965 left-hand drive Roadster and spent its first 10 years abroad. It was then repatriated and is now offered as a right-hand drive GT. Finished in White with Black upholstery and Red carpets, it sports a Webasto sunroof, wood-rim steering wheel and wire road wheels. Being sold at No Reserve and without MOT or tax, it will doubtless require some TLC and recommissioning before returning to the road.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
