Introduced in Autumn 1955, the MGA married a proven chassis design derived from its TD/TF predecessors (independent coil and wishbone front suspension and live rear axle) to the new B-series four-cylinder, pushrod-ohv engine first seen in the 1489cc Magnette saloon. Borrowing cues from the Abingdon factory's successful EX182 prototype racers (fifth and sixth in class at that year's Le Mans) its wonderfully elegant styling ensured strong sales on both sides of the Atlantic. Continually updated, the MGA range was joined by Coupe and Twin Cam variants in 1956 and 1958 respectively. Prompted by the latter's performance advantage, the standard pushrod model received a capacity increase to the same 1588cc, plus front disc brakes in May 1959. Equipped with a four-speed manual gearbox and rack and pinion steering as standard, the resultant `1600' was reputedly capable of 100mph plus.
Though superseded by the unitary-construction MGB in 1962, the A remains a favourite for its excellent handling, and is popular in historic rallying, especially in coupe form. Almost all MGAs were sold for export, but this coupe is an original right-hand drive car that the vendor describes as being in "good all-round condition", the paint is rated as "good, with the odd stone chip", and the engine, four-speed transmission, and interior as "good" with the electrics "all working". He adds: "The car was subject to a body-off refurbishment in 1982 and was last used on the road in 1997, having been dry stored as part of a private collection since. It is the winner of many shows and trophies, which will be passed to the new owner".
