lthough the Jaguar name first appeared on an SS 2.5-litre saloon at the prewar 1935 Motor Show at Olympia, the now world famous marque did not become a make in its own right until 1945 when the Blackpool-born and onetime Crossley Motors trainee William Lyons, later knighted, formed Jaguar Cars Limited in Coventry. Both before and after the war, Lyons stylish motor cars turned heads for combining elegance with real sportiness.
His immediate postwar cars were really of prewar design and were fitted with 4-speed synchromesh gearboxes, mechanical brakes and beam axles. Even though 2664cc and 3485cc engine production had been moved in-house, the 4-cylinder, overhead valve, pushrod 1775cc mainstay power unit was still being made for him by Motor City neighbour Standard. With only minor changes, the MkIV saloon was made from October 1945 until the autumn of 1948 when the MkV replacement arrived.
It is suggested that the 1947-manufactured and really good looking MkIV 1.7-litre sports saloon being auctioned here today may well have taken part in the 1947 Monte Carlo Rally, although this has yet to be substantiated. An old style 1968 green logbook is in the history file, together with sundry old MOTs and former bills of sale. The bodywork, two-tone blue paintwork and interior in red are all reportedly in excellent condition, and we understand that the tyres have been renewed recently.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
