The right-hand drive Galant VR4 on offer is a Group A Rally Car built in 1988 by Ralliart Japan and campaigned in the Asia Pacific Championship before being shipped to the UK during 1992. At that stage it was upgraded to 'Evo' specification and prepared by Ralliart Europe for use as a high-speed recce car ahead of the 1992 Safari Rally. The Mitsubishi passed into private hands thereafter and had been unused for twelve years when it entered the current ownership during 2004. Having been treated to an extensive restoration by former Ralliart mechanics, the Galant was then employed with much success on UK and European rally events, where it achieved one outright win and frequently embarrassed far more modern machinery.
It is currently finished in Works colours and liveried as Pentti Airikkala's RAC Rally winner, having been used to lead the procession at his funeral - it is understood to be the only ex-Works machine currently not housed in a museum. The Mitsubishi has been prepared by the ex-Ralliart staff of Tolman Motorsport, is ready to compete once more and comes complete with UK rally log book and an MOT valid into December. The Galant is fitted with a 34mm restrictor, so is eligible for both UK and European events and is currently set up for tarmac stages.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
