The R107-series SL was an extremely accomplished design as witnessed by its exceptional eighteen-year production span (1971-1989). Notable for its adoption of trailing-arm independent rear suspension in place of the antiquated swing-axle system that Mercedes had doggedly developed for so long, it proved reassuringly sure-footed. An impression only reinforced by the provision of power-assisted steering and all-round servo assisted disc brakes. Propelled by a new generation of all alloy SOHC V8 engines, the R107-series SL convertibles proved effortless performers.
Finished in silver with blue upholstery, this particular historic rally prepared example is variously descried by the vendor as being in "good" (3.5 litre engine, automatic transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim) or "very good" (bodywork, paintwork) condition. While, he adds that: "The car has been restored and upgraded over a period from June 2006 and there are accompanying workshop bills totalling more than £40,000. The engine was comprehensively overhauled by Crewe Engines in September 2003 and has covered about 18,000 miles since then. Electronic ignition and an upgraded fuel injection system have been fitted, the latter proving 100% reliable. Tank range is now about 350 miles under rally conditions. The work carried out is too extensive to list but the entire suspension has been refurbished and uprated with higher, stiffer springs and new bushes, wishbones etc. The fuel system, steering, sub-frames, mounting bushes and all major components have been rejuvenated or replaced. The brakes have been gone through and fitted with fast road pads and racing brake fluid. The hood was replaced in 2004 and the car has been professionally resprayed and touched-up, as required, after every event. The car sports an electro-mechanical rally trip meter, sump guards, roll bar, 5-point harnesses, racing seats and fire extinguishers. 'VBY 26L' is FIVA registered and has undertaken the following events: 2003 (Trans Cymru Welsh Challenge 2nd overall, World Cup Rally 4th), 2004 (Three Castles Rally 1st-in-class, Safari Challenge 5th, HRCR Classic Trophy 2nd, Rouen Classic Rally 3rd), 2005 (HRCR Classic Trophy 3rd) plus various smaller HRCR rallies in France and touring rallies in Spain during 2006 and 2007". Eligible for historic class (free) road tax, this well travelled Mercedes-Benz is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until March 2009.
