Sydney Allard started making specials for trialing and his successes saw demand for others that spawned a new carmaker. The pre-war cars had mostly Ford engines but after the war they became more civilised and extremely fast with Cadillac and Chrysler V8 engined in supercars like the J2X.
The M1 was introduced in 1947 and is historically viewed as the first true civilised Allard and this particular example was delivered new in 1949 to Messrs F. English Limited of Branksome in Bournemouth, the official Allard dealer for the area. By 1984 it had left Hampshire for Hastings where it remained until 1990 when Chris Humberstone acquired it. At this time fully restored examples could command anything up to £70,000 and so, with this in mind, the restoration, was started.
There is a letter in the history file detailing the work carried out but suffice it to say twelve years later it has been renewed from the ash frame upwards and the history file contains invoices for professional services exceeding £26,000 and this does not include a further 1000 hours of labour.
Very rarely does one find an example of the M1 in such wonderful condition and when you see it you may agree that this could very well be the bargain of the century.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
