Lot details Registration No: EAN784D Chassis No: PIF1270B/H Mot Expiry: Feb 2010
Introduced in August 1966, the Jaguar 420 (alongside its Daimler Sovereign twin) was the ultimate development of the 'small cat' line that had begun some eleven years earlier with the MKI. Slotting between the 3.8 S-type and the top of the range MKX, the 420 / Sovereign served in many ways as a testbed for the forthcoming XJ6's styling and mechanical layout. Featuring all-round independent coil-sprung suspension, disc brakes and a detuned version (245bhp versus 265bhp) of its MKX sibling's 4235cc, straight six DOHC engine, it was a far more sophisticated design than the MKII with which it shared a glasshouse / passenger cell. Only in production between 1966 and 1969, the 420 is among the rarest of Jaguar's post-war saloons.
Finished in metallic blue with black upholstery, this particular example has enjoyed a long second career as a successful historic racer. Prepared with an eye to safety as well as speed, 'EAN 784D' boasts a full roll cage, plumbed-in fire extinguisher system and uprated twin circuit braking system (dual servos, alloy callipers, balance bar etc). Converted from automatic to four-speed manual transmission, it is powered by a suitably 'breathed upon' 4235cc DOHC straight-six engine. Potentially eligible for the JEC's popular saloon championship or the CSCC's Swinging Sixties series etc, the 420 is also well suited to sprint or hillclimb usage (though putting it through a MOT test would not be impossible either). Describing the Jaguar as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, electrical equipment and bodywork, the vendor adds that it would be "very competitive in the right hands". Maintained by a highly capable marque specialist in recent years, this modified 420 is worthy of close inspection.
