Intended as a direct riposte to the Austin 7, Morris launched its Minor 8HP in 1928. Initially available with a (Wolseley derived) overhead camshaft 847cc, four cylinder engine, a sidevalve unit of the same capacity was introduced in 1931. This later unit not only developed near identical power (its 19bhp being enough to propel the lightweight Minor to nearly 60mph) but also offered the twin advantages of greater reliability and lower cost. With its nimble, leaf-sprung chassis, all round drum brakes and wire wheels, the Minor was a fine handling car as proven by the competition exploits of its MG M-type cousin.
Finished in blue over black with blue leatherette upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in good overall condition. Owned for many years by a Welsh family whose daughter worked for the MOT inspectorate and who on occasion used it for her garage inspection duties (her name appears on some of the earlier accompanying MOT certificates), it benefits from the later sidevalve engine and four-speed manual gearbox. Said to "start easily and run very well", this rare and sought after Morris has latterly spent a considerable time abroad in hotter climes as witnessed by its somewhat faded hood and sidescreens.
