Lot details Registration No: MUA220F Chassis No: 26341 Mot Expiry: Sept 2005
Based on a design exercise by Pelle Peterson (though with some subtle reworking by both Ghia and Frua), the Volvo P1800 sports car was unveiled at the 1960 Brussels Salon. Not entering production for a year, its two-door monocoque bodyshell was equipped with independent front suspension, a coil-sprung 'live' rear axle and disc / drum brakes. Powered by a 1782cc ohv four-cylinder engine (complete with five-bearing crankshaft and twin SU carburetors) allied to a four-speed manual gearbox, it was capable of over 100mph. Initially manufactured in the UK, P1800 assembly was transferred to Sweden in April 1963 due to increasing concerns over fluctuating build quality. Never a major contender in the racing world, a P1800 did, however, finish second in class at the 1967 Daytona 24-hour race.
Finished in white with black leather / PVC upholstery, this particular example is variously rated by the vendor as being in good (transmission, electrical equipment and interior trim) to very good (engine, chassis, paintwork and wheels/tyres) condition. Reportedly subject to a ten-year rebuild during which various body panels and floor sections were replaced as necessary, its waxoyled underside is said to "look as good as the top". With its overdrive gearbox, brakes and steering etc "all brought up to standard by a professional restorer", this Swedish made P1800 has the further advantages of twin mirrors, period radio, Webasto sunroof and re-upholstered seats. Offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until 29th September 2005 and road tax until December 2005.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
