Lot details Registration No: HUP 377 Chassis No: E8216 Mot Expiry: Nov 2004
The Hupp Motor Company was founded in 1908 in Detroit, Michigan, by Robert Craig Hupp, who had learned the pioneer automobile manufacturing business with Oldsmobile, Ford and Regal before setting up on his own. By the 1920s, Hupmobile were a top ten regular in terms of their production figures, their bodies, initially made by H&M, soon being made by new owners Murray Body. After employing only 4-cylinders, their first straight-8 powered car appeared from 1925. The 4042cc 60bhp Model E had 4-wheel hydraulic brakes from Lockheed and, with prices starting at $2595, such eights were expensive.
The Hupmobile on offer, known as 'The Turk', was imported from Australia in 1994 and took part in the 1995 Monte Carlo Challenge for historics, winning the Spirit of the Rally award, as well as successfully completing many other European Tours. Well maintained and proving to be very reliable during a nine year residency in an East of England collection, the E1 tourer has also been a high earner from carrying out wedding duties.
The overall condition of open bodywork, turquoise paintwork, blue interior, 8-cylinder engine, electrical equipment and 3-speed manual gearbox is said to be good. The vendor tells us that both MOT test certificate and tax-exempt licence disc should have been freshly renewed by sale day - interested clients are advised, however, to check these out at the Documents Office at Buxton. Also included with this vehicle is the highly marque-appropriate registration HUP 377.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
