Lot details Registration No: PF 8358 Chassis No: 40YC Mot Expiry: None
Henry Royce's New Phantom in 1925 was powered by an entirely new overhead valve, 6-cylinder, 7668cc engine - and, as on the 20hp, had a disc-type clutch and adjustable radiator shutters. The Phantom I chassis, however, was much the same as on the later 4-wheel braked Silver Ghost, a total redesign not taking place until the 1929 Phantom II.
The second Phantom I going under the hammer left the R-R works in rolling chassis form in August 1926 being dispatched to Royal coachbuilders Hooper and Company of St James Street, London W1 for them to fit their limousine bodywork. The records confirm that the car would then appear to have been exhibited at the 1926 Scottish Motor in December of that year, before being supplied to first owner, a W G J Lock of Richmond Hill, Surrey, in March 1927, 23/3/1927 being the date of first registration. Interestingly, the second owner is recorded in February 1933 as having been His Grace the Duke of Rutland of Belvoir Castle. Production details have been recorded on the factory-build sheets, copies of which are in the history file.
According to the Cheshire vendor, 40YC was acquired as a rolling chassis in 1990, since when it has been fully rebuilt to the present open 4-seater tourer specification. From the tax disc, this Road Fund exempt historic was last on the road in April. The total mileage displayed when entered was 83,708.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
