An integral part of General Motors' burgeoning empire during the 1920s, Buick was widely famed for the advanced engineering and durability of its products. Boosted by a series of high-profile exploits including the first automotive expedition to Afghanistan (1923), victory in the Leningrad-to-Moscow endurance trials (1925), assorted African hill-climb wins, a tug of war with an elephant and patronage from the Sultan of Johore, the marque celebrated sale number 2,000,000 in 1926. Priced at between $1,195 and $1,995, the following year's six-cylinder model range boasted leaf-sprung suspension, four-wheel drum brakes, detachable cylinder-heads (Buick had been a pioneer of overhead valve technology) and three-speed centre-change manual transmission. Available with a choice of sixteen different bodystyles, the Buick 'Standard' and 'Master' Sixes were a cut above their Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge opposition.
Finished in blue over black with blue cloth upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (three-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment) or "very good" (207ci / 3.4 litre OHV engine, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork, wheels / tyres) condition. Riding on wooden artillery wheels shod with whitewall tyres, it wears Opera Coupe coachwork by Fisher. Said to have undergone extensive restoration since entering the current ownership some sixteen years ago, it has apparently seen little use since. Believed but not warranted to have covered 56,495 miles from new, this handsome Vintage Buick is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until July 2007.
