Lot details
Registration No: BBH516P
Chassis No: 500259
Mot Expiry: Nov 2010

Notable as Iso's final automotive product, the Lele was named after marque founder Renzo Rivolta's daughter-in-law. Introduced in 1969, the 2+2 seater's striking silhouette was the work of Bertone. Derived from that of its Rivolta predecessor - and thus inspired by Giotto Bizzarrini (father of the Ferrari 250 GTO and Lamborghini 350GT) - the newcomer's separate boxed-steel platform chassis was equipped with independent coil and wishbone front suspension, a De Dion back axle, recirculating ball steering and four-wheel disc brakes. Powered by first Chevrolet (5.4 litre / 5.8 litre) and then Ford (5.8 litre) V8 engines allied to either manual or automatic transmission, the two-door coupe proved an effortlessly strong performer; the humblest derivative being credited with 300bhp and a 130mph plus top speed. A credible rival to the likes of the Aston Martin DBS and Ferrari 365GT 2+2, the Iso Lele was even more exclusive. Phased out when Iso closed its doors in December 1974, some sources suggest that just 317 cars were produced of which a mere 38 were to right-hand drive specification.

Finished in red with dark brown / black upholstery, this particular right-hand drive automatic example has been in the current ownership since August 2003. Dry stored as part of a private collection, it has seen little - if any - use over the last six years. However, accompanying invoices show that the Iso's previous keeper, M. Searle Esq of Bruton, Somerset, spent a considerable sum with Upton Noble Garage of Shepton Mallett, Somerset trying to improve it. The largest invoice totals £10,102.23 and covers a thorough engine overhaul (main / big-end bearings, pistons / rings, head gasket set, camshaft, valves etc), reconditioned ancillaries (alternator, starter motor) and new sills. Though, other bills relate to a brake system overhaul and the fitment of new coil springs and shock absorbers all round. The earliest MOT on file dates back to March 1983, while the most recent was issued in October 2002. The odometer shows an unwarranted 60,000 miles. In need of recommissioning, this rare Italian Gran Turismo has the makings of an exciting project.

PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle now has an MOT until November 2010.
