The G3C Matchless and its sister AJS model, the 16C could trace its origins back to 1946 and the introduction of the first dedicated competition model, the early machines were intended for use in both scrambles and trials, however from 1951 two distinct paths of development were followed with specialist machines emerging for use in the two disciplines. The trials model retained the rigid frame of its predecessor until 1956 when a pivoted fork frame was introduced which relied on the famous "Jampot" suspension units. The next major change occurred in 1957 when the Burman gearbox was replaced by an AMC unit. The 1959 season saw the introduction of a completely new all welded frame that resulted in a weight saving of approximately 25lbs in comparison to the previous version. The Jampots were discarded in favour of Girling units and the brakes, reflecting the increasingly specialised nature of trials machinery, were of 5.5 inch diameter instead of the 7 inch units of its predecessor.
This example is presented to a high standard, finished in the traditional black and silver livery.
