Introduced at the 1954 Detroit Motor Show, the Ford Thunderbird was a direct riposte to the Chevrolet Corvette. Built around a perimeter frame chassis equipped with independent coil and wishbone front suspension a 'live' rear axle and hydraulic drum brakes, it was powered by a 292ci (4.8 litre) ohv 193hp V8 engine. Offering comparable performance but far greater comfort than its rival, it walked the sales race. Updated for the 1956 season, it gained 'anti-burst' door locks, 'high visibility' portholes (detachable hardtop versions only) and 12 volt electrics. Available with the option of a more powerful 312ci (5.1 litre) unit, it was visually distinguished by a near vertical 'Continental' style spare wheel cover. Considered by many to be the ultimate 'Littlebird' variant (as opposed to the 1958 onwards four-seater 'Bigbirds'), the '56 model is reputedly the rarest too with just 15,631 recorded sales.
Finished in fiesta red with off-white hardtop and complimentary two-tone upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example has been part of the collection since 1989. Carrying the larger V8 mated to three-speed manual transmission (or so its VIN tag would imply), its interior boasts a 'Swift Sure' power brake pedal, electric windows, 'Town & Country' radio and aluminium dashboard / door trim inserts. Under the bonnet, its chrome plated air filter and 'See Clear' washer fluid bag both look original. Benefiting from Hella H4 headlamps, it wears a Classic International Thunderbird Club sticker.
