Lot details Registration No: DXO 242 Chassis No: B55JY Mot Expiry: May 2005
Being auctioned here is a 1937 `Derby Bentley' 4 1/4 Litre with closed coachwork handbuilt by the craftsmen of Park Ward. DXO 242 was first registered to a Mr J R Brooks on the 9th of April 1937, the current owner acquiring the stylish sports saloon in June 1990.
He tells us that the righthand drive car was stripped back to bare metal and last repainted in 1992, the engine being overhauled at the same time with Bentley MkVI conrods and shell bearings fitted, oil pump upgraded and full-flow oil system fitted (there being invoices from marque specialists Brunts on file). We also understand that the clutch was renewed and new spring shacklepins and bushes fitted, whilst the springs were overhauled. Usefully, too, a special high ratio crown wheel and pinion set from Will Fienes was fitted.
Currently, chassis condition is described as excellent, with bodywork, blue over silver paintwork and blue leather interior reportedly in good shape, motor and transmission said to be in very good order and electrical equipment sound.
Only the fourth owner, the vendor has enjoyed this fine motor car for the past fourteen years, attending many Bentley Drivers Club events and, most years, successfully completing Continental trips. Indeed, the high ratio rear axle, he says, as well as the superb engine with its high oil pressure and cool running, not forgetting the 18-19 average mpg, have enabled those long journeys to be tackled with considerable ease.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
