The Morgan 4/4 has been in production for an unprecedented seventy-two years, a fact that has earned both manufacturer and model a place in the Guinness Book of Records. The Malvern Company's first four-wheeled / four-cylindered design (hence the name), it has stayed true to the same tried and tested formula for generations. Unveiled in 1992, the Morgan 4/4 1800 was faster, cleaner and more frugal than many of its predecessors. Based around a box-section ladder-frame chassis equipped with independent 'sliding pillar' front suspension, a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle and disc / drum hydraulic brakes, the aluminium over ash construction of its bodywork contributed towards a commendably low kerb weight (circa 868kg). Embracing the marque tradition of using proprietary running gear, the newcomer was powered by a Ford-sourced 1796cc four-cylinder `Zetec' engine (complete with fuel-injection and double-overhead camshafts) allied to five-speed manual transmission. Impractical yet beguiling, the 4/4 1800 sported a seductive interior, minimal luggage space and potentially argumentative hood. Further boasting a singularly involving driving experience and vivid acceleration, it looks destined to remain a staple part of the Morgan range for decades to come (though, current versions use a less `rev-happy' Ford Duratec unit).
Finished in Dark Green with black leather upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example is described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, coachwork and bodywork. A desirable two-seater model that is said to have benefited from a recent and extensive restoration, it apparently shows an unwarranted 58,000km on the odometer. Interestingly, we are informed that the Morgan was previously for sale with the respected Lex Classics dealership in Holland for 42,000 EUROS. Well suited to continental motoring, this handsome Morgan 4/4 1800 is worthy of close inspection.
